That's Right, People, Bring It Down!

If you're tired of paltry excuses for substandard academic performance, bizarre social engineering -- such as distributing condoms to 6th graders, and other offensive administrative decisions, such as allowing a speaker to tell 8th graders that stripping can be a lucrative career choice for girls, with every two inches on top translating into so many thousands of dollars more per year, (check out this month's MIM column, linked in the post below, for documentation of the preceding), there is a simple way to bring the public school systems into check -- this article from Walla Walla makes it plain that the way to regain control is to hit them in the wallet.

District sees too few students
Rising numbers of homeschooled students mean a budget shortfall for Dayton schools.

DAYTON - It's Dayton School Superintendent Rich Stewart's first year on the job, and he has one question: ``Why aren't kids attending Dayton schools?'

...The loss of students has also seriously eroded the district's reserve fund, according to Stewart. The fund was $352,000 at the beginning of the year and, at best, the district hopes to have $100,000 to begin the new fiscal year July 1.

Each student who lives within the district and makes an alternative education choice costs the district $5,015 that the state pays per full-time equivalent student enrolled.

It's that simple -- take away the money and shut them down. Let it be known that parents will no longer tolerate such nonsense, and if they want their per student funding, they need to put the focus where it should be -- real education.

Personally, I believe in homeschooling. I'd like to see the separation of State and school. But, for those still attached to the concept of public education, the threat of losing money is an effective tool -- if followed up with real action -- to bring schools in line with true academics and community standards.
